Yiagra Africa has thrown its weight behind President Tinubu’s request to remove the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of Adamawa, Abia, and Sokoto States, over alleged electoral misconduct.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), suspended the RECs in March 2023, over alleged actions that compromised the commission’s neutrality and integrity.
The Adamawa REC, Hudu Yunusa-Ari, unlawfully assumed the role of the Returning Officer during the State’s Governorship election, and announced false results.
INEC also suspended the Sokoto REC, Dr. Nura Ali, and Abia REC, Mr. Ike Uzochukwu, for dereliction of duty. Ali is also facing prosecution by the Federal Government for alleged bribery and corruption linked to the 2023 elections.
The election monitorung group in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Samson Itodo, urged the Senate to approve Tinubu’s request for the removal of REC to strengthen accountability and public trust in the electoral process.
“The credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system is at stake. In a bold step toward accountability, President Tinubu has requested the removal of suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) implicated in electoral misconduct.
“Yiaga Africa welcomes this move and urges the Senate to act swiftly in approving their removal to safeguard electoral integrity.
“This is not just about three officials—it’s about the future of free and fair elections in Nigeria. The appointment of credible electoral officers is critical to restoring public trust and strengthening democracy.
“Together, we can ensure Nigeria’s elections remain a true reflection of the people’s will,” the statement said.
