A deadly explosion caused by objects suspected to be a military-grade grenades found among scrap materials, has reportedly killed a yet-to-be-identified scavenger.
The incident occurred on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at Taiwo Street, Idi-Araba, Mushin, Lagos South-West Nigeria.
It was gathered that the deceased apparently tampered with the object without knowing what it was, and the blast killed him instantly and injured three bystanders.
The Lagos State Police Command spokesman, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the incident, said it happened around 1.30 pm.
He stated that investigations are ongoing to determine how the explosives made their way into civilian possession.
“Officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, in Ikeja, were dispatched to the scene following a distress call reporting a suspected bomb explosion.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the explosion was accidental and triggered when the scavenger attempted to dismantle one of the grenades.
“Emergency responders quickly transported the injured to a nearby hospital, while the deceased’s body was taken to a public morgue for autopsy,” he said.
Hundeyin also urged members of the public to remain at alert and report any suspicious objects or activity to the authorities.
