Two love birds, Chibuike Ogbu, (24) and Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye, (23), have been arrested by operatives of Anambra Police Command for allegedly staging their own kidnap.
Their arrest by operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu of the Command, followed intelligence-led operations.
A statement on Saturday, August 30, 2025, by the Command’s Spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that the supposed victim, Josephine, conspired with Chibuike (her boyfriend) to stage her own abduction.
“Further information reveals that the suspects demanded ₦15,000,000 (Fifteen Million Naira) ransom, and after negotiation, three million naira (₦3,000,000) was transferred into the victim’s account.
“The operatives also recovered the sum of ₦1,200,000 (One Million Two Hundred Thousand Naira), being part of the ransom earlier paid by the girl’s family members,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has expressed deep concern over the rising cases of moral decadence in the society.
Orutugu described the incident as a reflection of the rising moral decay in the society, where young people are increasingly resorting to criminality for selfish gains.
He urged parents, guardians, and religious leaders to intensify efforts in inculcating discipline, integrity, and sound values in their children and wards.
The CP also warned youths against engaging in self-destructive ventures, stressing that the long arm of the law will always catch up with criminals, no matter how cleverly disguised their schemes may be.
