Benin Palace Breaks Silence, Washes Hands Off Humiliation of Don Pedro Obaseki

The Benin Traditional Council (BTC), has disociated the palace of Oba Ewuare II, from the humiliation of Dr. Don Pedro Obaseki, by a mob of youths last week.

Recalled that dozens of angry youths had on Sunday, December 28, 2025, assaulted and stripped one Don Pedro Obaseki, a cousin of former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, over alleged disrespectful remarks against the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II.
‎
The victim who was playing football at Uwa Primary School field, located along Igbesamwan Street, Benin, was seen in a viral video as the youths dragged him along Akpakpava Road to the Ring Road, before taking him to the Oba’s Palace.

But, the BTC in a statement on Wednesday, insisted that the Benin monarch is peace-loving, hence could not have authorized the incident.

The Council while advising youths against taking the law into their hands, urged social media users to always cross-check informations properly before posting.

The statement read:
“The Benin Traditional Council wishes to use this medium to inform the general public that the unfortunate incidence in which Pedro Obaseki was manhandled was not authorized by the Oba of Benin. And it cannot be authorized because it is not in the character of our revered monarch to do so. The Oba of Benin is a peace-loving father to all.

“The Benin Traditional Council also wish to advice our youth not to take the laws into their hands on any issue no matter the degree of provocation. They should always respect the laws of the land in all actions and utterances and allow appropriate Security Agencies handle all matters.

“Social media users should equally endeavour to cross-check information appropriately before posting.”
