The Delta State Government has taken steps to make payment of 13th-month salary a permanent statutory benefit for its civil servants.

The state Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, who announced this on Friday, after the Executive Council meeting chaired by Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori, however disclosed that it was subject to legislative approval.

He said a memo was presented by Governor Oborevwori to make payment of the 13th-month salary a permanent legal entitlement for civil servants and was approved by the council.

He further explained that an executive bill would be transmitted to the House of Assembly to provide legislative backing for the landmark welfare initiative.

“The proposed law would ensure the payment no longer depended on the discretion of any administration but became a guaranteed workers’ right.

“Once the bill is passed into law, workers in the state will continue to enjoy the benefit beyond the tenure of the present administration,” Aniagwu said.
