Following public outcry and widespread online reports highlighting prolonged power outages in the Omoregie/MTN Mast axis of Ugbor area in Benin City, Edo State, the Benin Electricity Distribution Plc (BEDC) has finally restored power to the area.
It would be recalled that concerned residents of the affected area had on Thursday, June 4, 2025, called out the electricity distribution company, which attracted widespread online publicity.
This is coming after several months of consistent power outage in the entire area, even after contributing money to repair and also buy armored cables for the faulty transformer.
The management of BEDC swiftly responded to the public outcry by deploying engineers who carried out remedial repairs on the faulty transformer that finally resulted in restoration of powed.
While residents acknowledged the prompt response that rusulted in the restoration of power, they, however, insisted that the underlying problem remains unresolved.
According to them, the decades-old transformer continues to underperform, resulting in consistently low voltage across the affected neighborhood.
They maintained that lasting solutions—not cosmetic repairs—are needed.
A resident in the area who asked not to be named in print, noted that the swift action only brings to light a long-standing concern that BEDC responds to complaints only when pressure mounts on them.
“Basic appliances either struggle to function or are blown off, and power remains largely insufficient.
“Until the faulty transformer is fully repaired or replaced and reliable voltage is restored, power supply in the area will remain unstable and inadequate.
“For many, this is progress—but far from resolution,” he said.
