The Anambra State Police Command has appealed to Nigerians to show understanding with the Command over the two suspects that escaped from its custody.
The two suspects were arrested in connection with the murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, reportedly escaped from police operatives who were leading them on a mission to arrest other suspects.
The incident has continued to generated criticism and widespread condemnation from members of the public.
But, the Command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a message on Thursday, tagged “Please trust us again”, called for the understanding and renewed trust of all stakeholders.
Ikenga noted that the police who, in conjunction with other security operatives, risked their lives to arrest the suspects, could not have deliberately allow them to escape, thereby compromising the investigation.
He said: “The police cannot be the same people who risk their lives with other security operatives to arrest these criminals involved in the gruesome murder of Hon. Justice Azuka and still turn around to sabotage the process.
“Remember that we had earlier paraded these suspects for Ndi Anambra and the world to see. We are owning up to our responsibility, no doubt.
“Nevertheless our main focus now, while we are still interrogating the officers involved in these operational lapses to face serious sanctions, is to re-arrest the suspects on the run,” Ikenga said.
