The Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly has rejected the Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s effort to resolve the political crisis rocking the State.
247nextnews.com recalls that the Governor bowed to pressure and invited the Amaewhule-led faction of the House to a peace meeting today (Monday, March 10), following the Supreme Court’s judgement on the State’s political unrest.
Invitation for the meeting was made through a letter from Dr. Tammy Danagogo, Secretary to the State Government, to Speaker Martins Amaewhule.
With the rejection, the political crisis rocking the State may not be ending soon.
The 27 lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike had upon the resumption of plenary after the apex court ruling, issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Governor to re-present his 2025 budget.
The Governor’s invitation had stirred hope that the political crisis in the State that had raged for nearly two years would be put to an end.
However, indications that the lawmakers may not honour the invitation to the meeting emerged Sunday night.
The lawmaker representing Akuku-Toru Constituency II, Lolo Isaiah Opuende, stated in a video clip that circulated Sunday night that it was time for Governor Fubara to “dey his dey” [be on his own] while the lawmakers would do the same.
Opuende recalled that when the political crisis began, their principal had foreseen that a time would come for both sides to go their separate ways.
He also questioned the mode of invitation transmission, telling Governor Fubara, “how can you write a letter and post it on social media and expect us to honour it? We are not kids”.
He, however, said if Fubara wants his invitation honoured, he “should write us the proper way”.
