Senate Approves Tinubu’s State of Emergency in River State

The Nigerian Senate has given approval for the state of emergency proclaimed by President Bola Tinubu’s in Rivers State.

The lower chamber of the National Assembly, the House of Representatives, had earlier in the day voted overwhelmingly for the proclamation.

With the approval, both Chambers thus granted President Tinubu the authority to enforce emergency measures while mandating a review of the situation at any time, but no later than six months.

They also imposed a joint committee of both chambers, to oversee the administration of affairs in Rivers State during the emergency period.

The Senate, however resolved to establish a mediation committee consisting of eminent Nigerians to help resolve the state’s political crisis.
