There is palpable political tension in Nigeria’s North Central State of Kano, following threat of the possible imposition of state of emergency in the State by the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
The threat followed alleged remarks made by the Deputy Governor of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-led State government, Aminu Abdulsalam, who accused Professor Hafsat Abdullahi Ganduje, wife of former Governor and current APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, of financial misconduct.
Specifically, the Deputy Governor accused Mrs Ganduje of interfering with pension funds during her husband’s tenure.
He alleged that pensioners were only paid after Professor Hafsat had taken her share of the funds.
Reacting to these allegations during an interview with Express Radio, the Publicity Secretary of APC in the State, Ahmad Aruwa, condemned Abdulsalam’s statements, describing it as defamatory and a violation of Nigeria’s constitution.
Aruwa stated that the comments amounted to character assassination and went against constitutional principles.
He further warned that such statements could escalate tensions in Kano, potentially leading to a declaration of a state of emergency, similar to what was imposed in Rivers State by the Bola Tinubu administration.
