VP Shettima, Gbajabiamila Off To U.K. To Accompany Buhari’s Body Home

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, on Sunday ordered his Vice, Kashim Shettima, proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany the remains of late former President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria for burial arrangements.

Also on the trip is the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Additionally, Tinubu has ordered that all flags be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect for the departed leader.

The President in a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, expressed his condolences to Buhari’s widow, Aisha Buhari, and the nation.

He described the late leader as a significant figure in Nigeria’s history, recognising his contributions during his tenure as both a military Head of State and a democratically elected president.

Muhammadu Buhari passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at approximately 4.30 pm local time following a prolonged illness.

He served as Nigeria’s military head of state from January 1984 to August 1985 and was later elected president in 2015 and 2019, serving two terms until 2023.

His leadership was marked by efforts to address security challenges and economic reforms, though his administration faced criticism over issues such as economic hardship and human rights concerns.
