Yamal makes history as youngest player to win Euros, World Cup

Lamine Yamal has etched his name into football history after helping Spain win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the youngest player ever to claim both the European Championship and the World Cup.

The Barcelona forward achieved the feat at 19 years and six days old, adding world football’s biggest prize to the Euro 2024 title he won with Spain in Germany two years ago.

Remarkably, Yamal has now won the two biggest international tournaments available to a national-team player on his first attempt, playing a decisive role in both campaigns.

His emergence began at Euro 2024. Then aged 17, Yamal was named Best Young Player of the Tournament, scored what was voted Goal of the Tournament in the semi-final against France, and was selected in the Team of the Tournament as Luis de la Fuente’s side were crowned European champions.

At the World Cup jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, Yamal continued his rise. Wearing Spain’s number 19 shirt, he scored once during the tournament and was a constant attacking threat, regularly drawing multiple defenders and creating space for his teammates.

The Catalan also became the third-youngest player to appear in a World Cup final, behind only Brazil’s Pelé, who was 17 years and 249 days in 1958, and Italy’s Giuseppe Bergomi, 18 years and 210 days in 1982.

Barcelona teammate Pau Cubarsí featured alongside him on that list, moving into fourth place at 19 years and 178 days and overtaking France’s Kylian Mbappé.

With two major international titles before turning 20, Yamal’s career trajectory suggests he could define the next era of Spanish football.
